Scottish Highland Cows

Scottish Highlands or "Coos", as the folks in Scotland refer to them, are a wonderful breed of hardy beef stock. Their beef is considered exquisite and fine, as well as healthier than many other beef breeds. In the past 10 years, their popularity has skyrocketed, due to their beauty, hardiness, foraging capabilities, docile temperament, mothering nature, and small frames compared to other cattle. This has allowed more family homesteads to own these cattle with less land.  At Ridge Runner Farm, we will continue to breed down the size of our highlands as we breed for pets vs. beef. These smaller cattle consume less pasture, less feed and require less maintenance with more docile personalities than their standard counterparts.  At Ridge Runner Farm, we believe that calves should stay with their Dam's until appropriate to wean and do not pull to bottle feed unless there is a medical necessity to do so.  We breed micro, miniature and mid cattle.  Some cattle breeders will choose to bring the height down on their cattle by using BD1 gene (CHONDRO +). This is a dexter birth trait that shortens the legs and can lessen an animals height by as much as 6 inches. If you have an animal that is chondro positive, then they have at least partial amount of dexter in their parentage line.  We have both chondro and non-chondro carriers on our farm and see benefits of both with careful and selective breeding.  We also have interests in breeding Highlands with other small breeds for tiny cross calves that bring in lots of fun colors.
